The Proposal
Alicia and I dated on and off over the course of three years, for the vast majority it was on. When we got back together the last time, we agreed that we needed to figure out where we were heading within six months. Not that we needed to get married shortly, but that we needed to know if that was the direction we were heading or not. Alicia had just transferred occupations from banking management to becoming a flight attendant for United Airlines. Making such broad changes to one's occupation is rather frightening and unsettling for anyone. I've always applauded Alicia's courage to make this change. The main people who come into banks are those with problems. Everyone else is satisfied by the ATM. With United flights, you say goodbye and never have to see them again. Plus the fringe benefits! Alicia is based in San Francisco for United. During the next several months, she would come down to Los Angeles and stay with me several days a month. Occasionally, I made it up to San Francisco. But, as many long distance relationships go, we spoke frequently on the phone. Alicia and I started seriously discussing the future of our relationship on September 6th. Six months went by quickly. Little progress had been made on the marriage decision. For those of you who know us, both Alicia and I are infamous procrastinators (think of when you got the invitation to our wedding). Then came March 6th, 2001, six months to the day later. We had plans to go to Disneyland. Unsure of why we were there, Alicia searched my pockets for a ring while we were riding the monorail. Little did she know at the time that I had a ring secreted away in an ankle pouch. At 4:15pm, in front of Snow White's Wishing Well, standing behind Alicia looking at the waterfall, I wrapped my arms around her and proposed...
